The CDL physical exam is a requirement for all commercial DOT drivers. CDL licenses come with a lot of responsibility, and liability, which is why in order to maintain employment as a driver at all it is required to have up-to-date CDL physicals on file at all times. Failure to complete, or keep up with, your CDL physicals can even lead to termination of employment and other serious repercussions.
Federal Requirements
According to the United States Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), “all commercial drivers of vehicles in interstate commerce with a maximum gross vehicle weight of over 10,000 pounds are required to obtain and maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (ME Certificate) –” and that’s not all. CDL drivers must also go through a “self-certification” process in which they formally affirm their intensions to operate within only one of four specific commercial categories, to the State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA). This is a great time to provide the SDLA with their own copy of your ME Certificate so you can get that taken care of as well.
Local/State Requirements
For the most part, local and state requirements for CDL physicals mirror those of the federal guidelines. You have to have one every year to prove that you’re capable of driving a commercial vehicle safely under any circumstances, both now and through the rest of the year. And failure to comply can leave you suffering restricted driving privileges, and temporary ineligibility to command any commercial vehicles that require CDLs.
